I felt really guilty leaving my students with the sub today. He seemed like a really nice guy (he's a pastor at one of the area churches) and I hope that the kids behaved for him. I didn't really give him a whole lot of direction. But I think that's okay.
I'm finding that I really like the people involved in the Theatre Tuscaloosa. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, and quickly become a family. I've only been helping these last two weeks, and everyone treats me like I've been there the whole time. Today, a retired doctor who volunteers his time working tech crew started talking to me, and he called me by name. I didn't think he would know who I was since I had never spoken to him. But he probably didn't think I would know who he was either.
On another surprising note, I've had some really good conversations about books with the actors and crew. Books that I read. Kids' books. Teaching books. Young adult books. Reference books. I like to talk about books, but it usually falls on deaf ears (or blind eyes, as it were). I have been very surprised. One of the guys told me that he went out and borrowed Eats, Shoots, and Leaves, by Lynne Truss, from the local library after our conversation last week.
I'm proud.
